Sic bo is an old Chinese dice game, and on a live table it is pure theatre: a glass shaker, three dice bouncing and a board that lights up with the winning bets. The name roughly means precious dice. You do not need to know anything about probability to enjoy it, but a little understanding goes a long way, because the layout mixes nearly even bets with wild long shots. This guide explains sic bo as you will find it on Mostplay's live tables and how to approach it sensibly.
How a round works
The short answer: you place chips on the layout, the dealer shakes three dice, and any bet that matches the result is paid. The total of the three dice runs from 3 to 18, and the layout lets you bet on the total, on particular numbers appearing, on pairs and on triples.
Rounds are quick but not frantic. There is a betting window with a countdown, the shake, and then a short pause while the screen highlights the winning areas. Most tables show the last few results along one side.
The main bets on the layout
Here are the bets you will meet most often, from the steadiest to the wildest.
| Bet | Wins when | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Total is 4 to 10, not a triple | Close to even, triples lose |
| Big | Total is 11 to 17, not a triple | Close to even, triples lose |
| Single number | Your chosen number appears on one or more dice | Pays more the more dice show it |
| Specific total | The dice add up to your chosen total | Middle totals land more often than extremes |
| Double | At least two dice show your chosen number | Fairly rare |
| Any triple or specific triple | All three dice match | Very rare, very high payout |
Where the house edge hides
Big and Small look like a coin toss, but every triple beats them, and that is where the house edge lives on those bets. The flashier bets are worse value as a rule: a specific triple pays a lot, but the gap between how often it lands and what it pays is wide.
This does not mean you must never touch the long shots. It means you should know what you are buying. If you enjoy a small flutter on a triple now and then, treat it like buying a raffle ticket at the club fete and keep the stake tiny compared with your main bets.
A calmer way to play
Pick one or two bet types and stick with them for the session. Jumping around the layout makes it hard to see how much you are actually staking per round. A fixed amount per shake and a set number of shakes keeps things clear.
The history board will show runs of Big or Small. As with roulette, the dice have no memory. If you prefer a single random outcome with a familiar shape, live roulette works on similar lines, while Dragon Tiger swaps dice for cards.
