Andar Bahar is the kind of game you can explain to someone in the time it takes a fast bowler to walk back to his mark. One card goes in the middle, two piles grow either side, and the first matching card decides the winner. It comes from India and is loved across the subcontinent for exactly that simplicity. This guide explains how Andar Bahar works on Mostplay's live tables, which side bets you might see and why a steady stake suits it.
How the game is dealt
The short answer: the dealer turns one card face up in the centre, often called the joker. You bet on Andar, the inside pile, or Bahar, the outside pile. The dealer then deals cards one at a time, alternating between the two piles, until a card of the same rank as the joker appears. Whichever side that card lands on wins.
Suits do not matter for the main bet; only the rank does. If the joker is a seven, the first seven to appear decides the round.
Why the two sides are not quite equal
One side receives the first card, which gives it a small head start. To balance this, many tables pay the side that is dealt first slightly less than the other. Which side starts can depend on the table, and some versions decide it by the colour of the joker.
This is precisely why the table rules are worth thirty seconds of your time. Two Andar Bahar tables that look the same can pay the two sides differently. The information panel on each Mostplay table sets out the exact payouts.
Side bets on the number of cards
Many live versions add bets on how many cards will be dealt before the match appears. These come in ranges, and the longer ranges pay more because a long wait is less likely.
| Bet type | What you predict | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Andar or Bahar | The side where the match lands | Close to even, small edge |
| Card count range | How many cards are dealt before the match | Higher payouts for long ranges |
| Joker side bets | Features of the joker such as colour or high or low | Offered on some tables only |
Pace and patience
A round can end on the very first card or run on for a while, which gives Andar Bahar a pleasing rhythm, a little like waiting for a wicket on a flat pitch. Even so, rounds come around quickly, and a few side bets per round can add up.
Keep the main bet as your anchor and use side bets sparingly, if at all. A time limit on your phone and a fixed number of rounds help. If you enjoy this style, Dragon Tiger is even faster and teen patti brings hand rankings into play.
